Past Projects
The Junior League of Charleston is a women’s empowerment organization with deep roots in the Kanawha Valley. The organization’s mission over the past 100 years has been to promote volunteerism, develop the potential of members for voluntary participation in community affairs, and demonstrate the effectiveness of those trained volunteers. For decades, members have leveraged monetary contributions and volunteer hours to effect lasting change across the Charleston, WV community.
In 1923, women interested in building a better community established the Junior League of Charleston (JLC). Throughout the past nearly 100 years, the JLC has grown in its membership and involvement in the community. We are a member of the Association of Junior Leagues International, Inc. (AJLI), which includes nearly 300 Leagues in the United States, Canada, Mexico and England.
As it was nearly 100 years ago, our community focus is children at risk. The Junior League of Charleston recognizes the need for every child to have an opportunity to live in a nurturing environment, conducive to develop to his or her full potential. A majority of our community projects involve supporting women and children.
These projects demand time, training and empathy from our volunteers. Through our Backpack Buddies program and other projects, we offer children in our community the tools for success.
